I sit here in my mother's home while she is in a rehab facility after suffering a fall. To her surprise, she likes the place. It may not be home sweet home, but it is worlds better than the hospital room she endured for six days. She needs much physical therapy. Mom is 93. My brother and I think this may be the fork in the road for her, where she may have to face the fact she really can't live alone anymore. We shall see!
Returning to Long Island where I grew up is always a mixed bag. I love seeing Mom, and have some nostalgia for the place, but I'm always glad to go home to Texas. Returning home is the cherry-on-top of travel for me. What is home to me? I don't have a lot of time this morning, so let me free associate:
Home is:
my favorite place
my husband
my cat
a yard full of botanical experiments
my art room
also my friends
my church
and my peace of mind.
HOME - the word has a rich resonance, doesn't it? And it contains the sound of that sacred word "om"!
I hope some of you will chime in and free associate on your meanings of this word.
Feel free to share your creativity in any form or media related to this word!
Blessings,
Keddy

I love this Keddy! I'll go for it ...
Home is
a safe place

Familiar food
comfortable clothes
privacy

I'm glad to hear your mom likes her new digs. Knowing she's getting good care and likes the place will make it easier for you to go home and relax. I LOVE your collage, Keddy!
Permalink Reply by Keddy Ann Outlaw on February 17, 2012 at 7:43pm Hi, Kay - Mom was a much less happy today, facing so many changes, and a loss of independence. She still wants to get back to her real home ASAP. So we shall see....
I love your list. Nothing like comfy clothes, food we like in our very own fridge, popcorn & movies, etc.
Makes me think about people all over the world who are homeless, and about how hard that must be.
And after I posted this, I couldn't help but think more about how much Mom must be missing all the elements of her home. So of course, I will try and make sure she is as comfortable and at home as possible before I return to TX in a few days.
Aww. Sad to hear your mom is less happy and missing her home. My heart goes out to her and you, because I know it tugs at your heart strings. She's lucky to have you for a daughter.

The place I most often wish to return to after a really hard day at work
A place I want to spend more time at wherever I retire in the future
a safe place
a place to be creative at times...
like to today I touched many rocks in order to create a more visually appealing (I hope) area to hide a french drain. I added some items for decoration (yard art) a sea horse and dolphin to hide the wire for a outdoor low voltage light. Oh, and I threw in a decorative snail. If you look in the middle of this photo you can see the beginning of where the hidden pipe begins. Still have to figure out what to place over the top of it. Maybe some shells as the water has to free-flow into the 25 foot long pipe. Not sure about the seahorse...might redo it all tomorrow! :) Thank you for sharing, Keddy! Hope you've had a good day.
Permalink Reply by Keddy Ann Outlaw on February 18, 2012 at 8:40pm Wow, great rock stash -- what fun to throw them around and rearrange, etc. I bring home rocks all the time but never this many. Have you collected them locally or are these well-traveled rocks?
Thanks for sharing - I like your answer about home being a place to be creative. And a place to apply our creativity to, as you have done!
Permalink Reply by Devin on February 19, 2012 at 12:40pm :) Thanks! These are ones I have collected in-state. I'm always picking up rocks, even if i see one while driving and am not in a hurry I'll turn around and go back and take a picture of it or grab it if it isn't on private property.
Here's a photo of some of my most favorite I've collected from travels or friends have brought back to me from their travels:
LOVE THIS, Devin! What a cool way to use your rocks! I love rocks, too. I have found ordinary-looking rocks that to me seem very special. For whatever reason, they speak to me, and I've brought them home from my travels as treasured souvenirs.
Home is a place to collect and store our treasured mementos -- including rocks.

My mother is also in a rehab facility (6 days so far) after being in the hospital for 5 days after back surgery. She is almost 85 and she can't wait to get out of rehab and go home. We are hoping for the best . . . that she can regain mobility in order to return home. My husband just went over to help her practice walking but she still needs to be able to get up out of bed and out of a chair and be able to bend over to put on her clothes and shoes. Mobility often is just being able to do the most basic things! She is so afraid that she won't be able to ever go back home again. Wishing good things for your mother and your family.
Permalink Reply by Keddy Ann Outlaw on February 19, 2012 at 1:43pm Thanks, Judy - What a coincidence. Hope your mother regains strength; hopefully the idea of returning home will motivate her to work at it. Blessed be.
We are determined that Mom get back home and get the help she needs there. I don't see that the small amount of time she has at PT here is really worth it... My brother is going to step in and bail her out a little further down the road if she continues to be unhappy. They have so many silly rules, and even tho most of them have a legal explanation, they are far from warm and fuzzy. So institutional.
Off the subject, but remember when you told us on YAK that you painted 800 canvases to see if you had the potential to be a painter when you started out? My question for you is - did you just keep painting over canvases, or did you toss them, etc.? I am starting to fool with paint and have a long way to go. Maybe I will take a photo of each imperfectly finished attempt, then gesso over it, etc. Got any advice?
Permalink Reply by Judi Russell on February 19, 2012 at 4:24pm You could gesso over the paintngs - would save some money. However, I tended to start a new painting on a clean canvas/paper. It has been fun to look back (when I get down on myself) to see that I really have moved forward. I have lots of paper/canvas that I can now go back to start again or embellish. Wishing you the very best. Judi
Permalink Reply by Keddy Ann Outlaw on February 19, 2012 at 4:39pm Thanx & I see I spelled your name wrong, got it now! Yes I guess it would be better to practice on paper. And gesso only works if you haven't got a lot of texture and paint brush marks underneath, or are desirous of playing with that.
