We spent two and a half hours discussing the first two yoga sutras –
YS 1.1 Atha Yoganusasanam – Now is the Time for Yoga
YS 1.2Yogas Citta Vrtti Nirodahah – Yoga is the cessations of the fluctuations of the mind.
There are 196 Sutras.
I have been practicing for 10 years and some of this still does not make sense.
Did I mention that we spent two and a half hours discussing the first two Yoga Sutras and there are 196 Sutras?
Did I also mentioned that over the course of the 5 days I just spent with my teacher in Baton Rouge – out of the 13 hours we actually spent in class, we probably talked about the first two Yoga Sutras 80% of the rest of the time?
Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that we were only discussing the first two Sutras and there are actually 196.
For anyone on the spiritual path, the above recollection of a weekend in retreat probably sounds pretty familiar. We find ourselves continually coming back to the same, unchanging information that was recorded in order to help guide us on this path. Over and over again we hear the phrases – Just Breathe, Inhale, Exhale, Quiet your Mind, I see the Divine within you…etc, etc.
As we dissected the idea of what is “Yoga” and what is not, referring to our states of mind this past weekend we turned our attention to the ideas of Purusa and Prakriti (see diagram 1.1). Now, like someone not wanting to give away the surprise ending of a movie – I am not going to go into all of the deliciously frustrating and beautiful details about how I personally processed the info – all I can say is I always leave the theatre of the Divine giving 8 thumbs up. What I can share with you is the idea that these unchanging and illuminated scriptures give rise the idea of the unchanging and illumined Self that abides in perfect and abundant peace within each and every one of us. This can be the mirror to reflect the True Nature of my being. A light went off in my heart as this information, that has been repeatedly contemplated and reflected upon, suddenly gave rise to a new perspective. I am grateful – grateful for those who “got this” and quietly and patiently hold the space for others. That in itself (especially for a know-it-all like me) is a teaching just as high.
So, looks like I have more to look forward to. Only 194 more sutras left to go!
