After my mastectomy, reconstruction started. They removed my breast and it was not skin sparing at all. They immediately inserted what is called an inflator. It is a flat balloon when they put it in and every six weeks it would be filled with a saline solution to stretch the remaining skin so eventually a breast implant can be put in its place.

The whispered exchanges in clinic corridors and doctor's waiting rooms and even on a short elevator ride from one hospital floor to the next, there is a bit of dark humor passed from one breast cancer patient to another: "Oh, wait till you finish treatment," a veteran will tell a rookie, "it's even worse."
